2009 employment opportunities
Exploration's Africa Europe region is offering a limited number of Summer Placements for the 2009 field season. These 8-10 week placements are based at an exploration project starting in early July. 2008 placements were in Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Turkey and Serbia. Successful applicants will work with Exploration geologists carrying out routine exploration tasks such as assisting with drilling operations, logging core or RC chips, working in geochemical & geophysical surveys, prospect mapping or early stage grassroots exploration.
Competition for places on the summer programme is generally keen with a typically high level is over-subscription. Placements are aimed at students in their penultimate year of study and are timed to coincide with summer vacation. The most important criteria used for selection is enthusiasm for field work and an interest oin the mining industry.
The New Graduate Recruitment scheme is an essential part of Exploration's recruitment strategy, used for identifying and retaining high calibre explorationists. The scheme has resulted in a pool of successful explorers and management staff and is considered a competitive advantage over traditional recruitment methods.
Applications to Exploration's NGR scheme is restricted to applicants having completed a summer placement. Applicants are drawn from the last three years' summer programmes. The closing date for the 2009 summer programme is 31st December 2008.

| March - May | University careers fairs & employer presentations for information. |
| January - March | Applications: applications open in January each year and close in early March. Register for Graduate News to receive advice of the open and closing dates. |
| April | Telephone interview: If short-listed you will be contacted to discuss any additional information we need that was not covered in your application. You may be contacted for more than 1 telephone interview - these will be conducted with human resources, a technical and / or hiring manager. Details about each interview will be discussed with you when we book a time slot with you. |
| April | Psychological Tests: We ask you to do 4 tests for us. One is a personality profile (OPQ) that you will do on line. There are no right or wrong answers to this test but it gives us an idea of your preferred work style. The other three tests give us some information on your numerical, verbal and logical reasoning abilities. These are also undertaken online, and you'll likely be asked to do a verification test a little further along in the selection process. |
| April | Site visits: Rio Tinto sites are located in South Africa and Namibia. Before we offer you a role in a remote area, we want to be sure you know what it's like to live and work there. So we fly you to one of our operations so you can see what it is like, and meet some of the people that you would be working with. We often combine medical examinations with the site visit. |
| April | Medical Examination: Health and safety is a priority for us and we want to know that you are fit to work at our operations. For example, if you have asthma, it's not possible to work in aluminium smelters. The medical exam is an important part of that process and is the final step before we make an offer. |
| End May | Offers made. |
