A number of our European business units recruit graduates to work in and from bases in Europe.
Rio Tinto Exploration (Africa/Europe)
Rio Tinto Exploration (Africa/Europe) based in Bristol, UK, covers exploration activities in Africa and Europe, and runs a summer student placement scheme for high performing geology/geoscience students. For applicants from Europe, Exploration draws its graduate recruits from students who have participated in the summer placement scheme. The summer programme is open to recent graduates and to current undergraduate and postgraduate students. The most important criteria used for selection is enthusiasm for field work and an interest in the mining industry.
These 8-10 week placements are based at an exploration project starting in July or September. Most likely destinations are Guinea, Mauritania, Mali, Botswana, South Africa, Eastern Europe or Turkey. Applicants accepted for placements will work with Rio Tinto geologists carrying out exploration work such as assisting with drilling operations, logging core or RC chips, working on geochemical & geophysical surveys, prospect mapping or early stage grassroots exploration. Having completed the vacation placement students may be invited to Rio Tinto Exploration's New Graduate Recruitment Scheme. Applicants for the Graduate Scheme are drawn from the last three years summer programmes. Competition for places on the summer programme is generally keen with a typically high level of over-subscription.
Applications are received between October and December each year. Please register for the Graduate Newsletter to be advised of the 2008 campaign.
Rio Tinto Aluminium (Anglesey)
The Rio TintoAluminium smelter at Anglesey in North Wales recruits directly from universities. The Rio Tinto Minerals (formerly US Luzenac) operation in Europe, is a bit different, in that it looks to take in chemical engineers with some experience in their customers' operations.
Anglesey Aluminium Metal Limited (AAM) is jointly owned by Rio Tinto (51 per cent) and Kaiser Aluminium & Chemical Corporation (49 per cent), and began operating in 1971. There are 540 staff employed at the smelter, the vast majority of whom live in the Holyhead area. Anglesey Aluminium, recruits 1-2 graduates each year. Graduates participate in a graduate development programme aimed at developing professional and leadership skills leading to technical or managerial leadership roles at Anglesey and potentially in the wider Rio Tinto group of companies.
Applications from students expecting to graduate within 12 months, should be sent by email to mailto: heather.broughton@anglesey.riotinto.com
