Rio Tinto's Canadian operations consist of three primary sites. The Diavik Diamond Mine, located on East Island in Lac de Gras approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife, is Canada's largest producer of diamonds.
The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets in Canada and its customer base covers North American, European and Asian steel producers. The Company operates a mine, concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Îles, Quebec. It also operates a 418 kilometre railroad that links the mine to the port. IOC has approximately 1900 employees.
QIT- Fer et Titane, along with Poudres Métalliques du Québec (QMP), plays a leading role in the Canadian mining and metallurgical industry. In business since 1950, this Québec-based Rio Tinto company that is recognised as a world leader in the production of titanium dioxide feed stock. It also enjoys international renown for the exceptional quality of its iron and steel.
Kennecott Exploration has regional offices in Vancouver, British Columbia and a laboratory in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The company is essentially responsible for discovering and acquiring mineral resources in North and Central America.
