Life in the East Kimberley
The East Kimberley region in Western Australia's far north experiences a tropical monsoonal climate with two distinct seasons. The 'wet' season occurs between October to April when most of the annual rainfall occurs and maximum temperatures can reach the high 40s (oC). The 'dry' season is typified by clear blue skies with daytime temperatures in the low 30s, cool evenings and brilliant sunsets.
The majority of Argyle's employees reside in the region's largest town, Kununurra, as well as the smaller communities of Wyndham and Halls Creek.
Kununurra is a picturesque and historical town with a population of 6,000 just 70 kilometres from the Northern Territory border. As the nearest town to the minesite, Kununurra offers a full range of retail, recreational, financial and community services. Wyndham is the most northerly town in Western Australia with around 800 residents, while around 260 kilometres south of the mine is Halls Creek, once a bustling gold mining town.
Lake Argyle is one of the largest man-made lakes in Australia and, just to the south, lies Purnululu National Park with its unique Bungle Bungle Ranges and impressive river gorges.
The East Kimberley region is famous for its remarkable landscapes, waterfalls, wildlife, rivers and national parks. It provides a wealth of opportunities for those who enjoy walking, climbing, fishing, kayaking, photography or simply relaxing and watching spectacular sunsets and a dark sky full of stars.
