The uranium mine bordering a national park
Energy Resources Australia (ERA) is a publicly listed company, 68.4 per cent owned by Rio Tinto. ERA has mined and produced uranium oxide from its Ranger mine in the Alligator Rivers region of the Northern Territory since 1980. The Ranger mine is on Aboriginal land and is surrounded by, but separate from, the spectacular Kakadu National Park. It stands approximately 250 kilometres east of Darwin where the company's head office is located.
Ranger Pit No 1 produced its first drum of uranium oxide in 1981. Current operations centre on Ranger Pit No 3, an open cut mine which is expected to remain viable until 2020. The mine is virtually self-sufficient with its own power, water treatment and ore treatment plants.
Ranger mine operates under a comprehensive and complex suite of environmental regulations, developed to ensure the conservation of the environment and wildlife.
ERA is one of the world's largest and most successful producers of uranium, providing 11 per cent of global production.
