Anglesey Aluminium

One of the world's most advanced aluminium smelters

Anglesey Aluminium Metal Limited (AAM) is one of the UK's three aluminium smelters. AAM uses alumina (produced from Bauxite ore) and calcined coke as its two main raw materials for the production of aluminium.

Over 330,000 tonnes of alumina are imported from places such as Jamaica and Europe whilst calcined coke is typically sourced from Europe. Annually, we produce over 145,000 tonnes of pure aluminium, which is distributed throughout the UK and Europe. This pure aluminium AAM produces is usually in sold as billet or rolling ingot.  AAM consumes 255MW of power, an amount that could power a city of 250,000 people for a year. Wylfa Nuclear Power Station is the source of this power and is located just 12 miles away at Cemaes Bay.

The health and safety of all employees, contractors and visitors is a high priority for the smelter. Our aim is to achieve zero injuries. To help effectively manage the environmental activities, AAM has implemented the international standard ISO14001 Environmental Management System (EMS). AAM received certification in March 2001 and continues to maintain these requirements. Internal and external audits are carried out on the EMS to ensure system compliance and continuous improvement across the smelter operation.

The company has an annual turnover of £130 million and employs around 540 people, most of whom live locally.
